Diptyque perfumes and candles: art inside a bottle

 

Diptyque is pure aesthetics.

Diptyque is the quintessential niche perfume.

 

It could not be otherwise given the origins of this French brand of high perfumery, born from the meeting of three personalities with a strong artistic temperament. One of those alchemies that change the course of things.

Christiane Montadre-Gautrot, Yves Coueslant and Desmond Knox-Leet know each other by chance, through mutual friendships.

Thus, a partnership  was born, a partnership destined to leave its mark.

We are in the late 50s and the three are eclectic artists: interior decorators, travel enthusiasts and connoisseurs of history art, painters, theater writers.

 

They set up a bazaar (today we would say a concept store) in one of the most iconic and "rebel" streets of Paris, the Boulevard Saint-Germain: it is still there, at no. 34.

They were two symmetrical shop windows with the door in the center and the association with the Renaissance diptych is instantaneous: from there the first boutique takes its name. More than a shop, a space for the soul, where the three exhibit their most loved objects that cannot be found elsewhere.

They come from everywhere; they are beautiful, original and handcrafted: bistro sugar bowls, crystals from Lorraine, essence burners; fabrics and textiles inspired by ancient ceramics.

 

Parisians who entered the bazaar found themselves catapulted into a dream universe so powerful as to revolutionize their aesthetic sense and influence their concept of elegance.

This is why, at a certain point, an important Parisian guide defines the three artist-friends as "merchants of nothing".

It is the consecration. And the beginning of an adventure that still today innovates and revolutionizes the perfume sector, thanks to the involvement of the best perfumers in the world.

 

Artistic perfumes and essences

 

Beautiful is not only what you see, but also what you perceive with the senses.

The unusual atmosphere of the bazaar is punctuated by music and aromas: it is no coincidence that 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain is the name of one of Diptyque's most iconic perfumes (the atmosphere of the shop; its warm welcome; its eclectic elegance enclosed in a bottle).

 

Music. Art. Theater. And the trees, the flowers, the plants.

Those of childhood gardens, which give life to true olfactory works of art: L' Ombre dans l' Eau is the memory in the form of a fragrance of the weeping willow that reflected her shadow in the water and under which the little Christiane; Eau de lierre is inspired by Yves' garden in Normandy, where the thick vegetation of ivy covered and enveloped the statues.

 

Diptyque perfumes: stories, journeys and olfactory landscapes

 

Diptyque perfumes are journeys (imaginary) and intimate experiences.

Olfactory landscapes full of sensations and emotions.

Do Son Diptyque, another masterpiece fragrance, evokes the Vietnamese summers of the young Yves made of sea breeze, the scent of tuberose and spices and which today gives life to an entire collection which, in addition to the eau de parfum, also includes soap, solid perfume, hair perfume, hand cream, body lotion and eau de toilette.

Diptyque Philosykos, on the other hand, is the memory of a Greek summer with the annexed exaltation of the fig tree; while Eau des Sens is a game, a challenge: that of bringing together all the shades of bitter orange in a single fragrance to create a cascade of freshness.

 

Words and images for the art of living

 

Stimulate and awaken the senses to fully enjoy life: this seems to be Diptyque's mission, since nothing in this phantasmagorical brand is left to chance.

The packaging is studied in detail. The label reflects the artistic soul of the founders, who initially designed the decorative motifs of fabrics and wallpapers for the elegant bourgeois residences in Paris and London.

Among these motifs was the elongated shield of the Roman soldiers of the Praetorian Guard, a tribute to ancient culture.

Inside the shield, the letters that make up the name of the brand and that of the perfumes are messy, dancing, enigmatic, bewitching and never the same: the Diptyque alphabet is made up of over 80 characters combined in all possible ways.

 

Not only words, however, but also images: the letters are surrounded by stylized illustrations made by hand in Indian ink: oriental visions, jungles, orchards, luxuriant gardens, known or only imagined landscapes.

Like a sort of identity card, they are an integral part of the perfume creation process: they appear on the back of the label visible through the liquid.

A tradition that continues today, 60 years later.

 

Diptyque candles

 

The house has been at the center of interest of the founders of Diptyque from the very beginning.

Therefore, a very rich line of phome fragrances roducts could not be missing.

 

Candles, first, for all tastes and in all formats and of which Diptyque is the absolute master: vanilla, tuberose, amber, rose.

They are the most loved and sought, not only because they are beautiful and capable of creating magical atmospheres, but also because they are designed to last longer than normal, even over 60 hours.

This is possible a result obtained with the numerous processing phases,  the choice of exceptional raw materials and the careful study of the behavior of essences in contact with heat.
